The Older Americans Advisory Board was established in 1979. It was originally created to help obtain state grants, and the board requested that it remain active as an advisory board to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to serve the county's elderly. The responsibilities are to investigate, review, and recommend to the BOCC services and programs that would benefit the older citizens of Monroe County, and to provide such assistance to the commissioners as requested by the board. Monthly meetings provide a means of communication between the commissioners, the administrator, senior management, and others throughout the county.
The OAAB comprises of 20 members. All are residents of Monroe County and at least 55 years of age or older with the exception of the commissioner ex-officio. Membership is appointed each January by the BOCC.
